SPA assessment in Pembrokeshire
This weekend I’ve been running an SPA assessment, a climbing instructor award overseen by Mountain Training. I run these awards down in Pembrokeshire, one of THE best areas (in the world?!) for climbing…
My candidates on this weekends SPA assessment were Dylan and Damien. Our first day was spent at Newton Head, where the rain held off till just as we were getting back to the cars (thanks rain!), though we did get a little damp from sea spray – the swell was massive down there today! As well as the personal climbing side of the syllabus, we looked at using a crag with a group utilizing both top and bottom ropes.
After a morning at the Haverfordwest Climbing wall, we headed out to Wolfs Rocks, an inland crag in between Haverfordwest and Fishguard. This lovely little venue is really only used by local outdoor centers, and is a great bottom roping and group abseiling area, but also contains some quality lesser-known bouldering!
We looked at some bits of the syllabus we covered yesterday, and finished the last little bits we needed to look at. Both Dylan and Damien put in strong performances, and were good passes! Well done on your SPA assessment guys and enjoy using your award!
